Why We're Building Puddle

It Started with Sea Turtles

My daughter was six when she became obsessed with sea turtles. Books, drawings, videos. My wife and I loved it but had no idea what to do with it.

We guessed: Monterey Bay Aquarium. I asked at the front desk if there was a marine biologist. One came out, took her backstage, answered a hundred questions. That afternoon powered months of deeper curiosity.

It was an accident. No map existed that said: here's how you turn a sea-turtle obsession into the right books, mentors, and experiences over the next five years. Wealthy families pay consultants to build exactly that. Everyone else gets Google at midnight.

Puddle is that missing map.

What Puddle Does

Parents tell Puddle what their child cares about — sea turtles, robots, music, drawing — plus their family's values and real constraints: budget, geography, time. Puddle builds a Growth Profile across seven developmental domains, draws on decades of child-development research, and connects families to human specialists when the situation calls for it.

The output is specific: which books, which local experiences, which experts to seek out, and when to drop an activity rather than push through.

76% of parents already know they're over-scheduling their kids. They can't stop because peer pressure overrides their own judgment.

That's the core insight from 60+ parent interviews. Parents don't need more information or another parenting blog. They need a specific, evidence-backed answer for their specific child — grounded in real research, reviewed by a network of child development experts — so they can act on what they already know instead of second-guessing it.

A parent can tell a coach: "Puddle says we should pause soccer this semester." They cannot say: "I just feel like it's too much." The research-backed recommendation, tied to their child's data, is what makes the difference.

When Puddle spots a problem, it doesn't stop at the diagnosis. It drafts the conversation — the words to say to the child, the teacher, the co-parent. Most parents get stuck in the gap between knowing what to do and actually doing it. Puddle closes that gap by giving them the language, the evidence, and when needed, a human expert standing behind them.

Why This Problem Persists

American parents spend billions every year on enrichment — tutoring, camps, music lessons, sports — with nobody connecting the dots across providers.

Parents who can afford it hire educational consultants, child psychologists, and college counselors. Those families get a coherent plan. Everyone else assembles fragments from blogs, Facebook groups, and word of mouth.

The supply side of this problem is fragmented by design. Tutors don't talk to music teachers. Therapists don't know about the robotics schedule. The coordination layer that wealthy families buy doesn't exist at any other price point.

A travel-ball coach says "commit now or lose the spot," and nobody can give parents a straight answer about what's actually right for their specific child.

Why Now

Cost collapse. Expert guidance that used to require expensive one-on-one consultations can now be generated at consumer scale. The economics of personalized child-development advice just became viable for every family, not only the ones who can afford private consultants.

Regulatory shift. COPPA 2.0 is forcing every platform to redesign for children. Millions of people already use AI for tutoring with zero COPPA-compliant alternatives for kids. Puddle was built for compliance from the start: children's data never reaches third-party models.

Behavioral shift. Schools are banning phones. Parents are looking for screen-light alternatives with real developmental substance. The cultural window for a product like this is open in a way it wasn't two years ago.

What We Learned the Hard Way

Before this product, we ran 45 families on a voice-AI version of Puddle. The idea was simple: an AI that talks directly to your child about their interests and helps them learn.

Parents told us: "I feel replaced."

We shut it down and rebuilt in six weeks. The lesson shapes every product decision we make now:

Parents want to be coached, not substituted.

Puddle doesn't insert itself between parent and child. It gives parents the insight, the language, and the confidence to lead — and then it gets out of the way.

The Bet

One third of accomplished adults trace their path back to a childhood interest that someone took seriously. The difference between a phase and a path is usually one person who said: here's where this goes next.

Puddle puts decades of developmental research and real human expertise behind that moment — for every family.

About the Founder

Sunny Patneedi has spent twenty years at Apple, Salesforce, and Microsoft. At Apple Maps, he led the team that shipped the world's first 3D Transit Maps, beating Google to market. He ran three engineering teams processing 150TB of data per day, contributing to Apple Maps growing from 200M to 800M users.

Father of two. He watched his daughter light up in front of a sea turtle tank because they got lucky. He wants to make that kind of moment less accidental.
