Autonomy Ladder

Independence isn't handed over all at once; it's released in stages. Select a domain and your current level of oversight to see exactly what the next step toward full autonomy looks like.

Build independence one step at a time

The Autonomy Ladder starts with a domain and the level of oversight you currently provide. It then shows the next transition, so you can consider one specific change rather than handing over every responsibility at once.

Use the suggested transition as a conversation about what your child will own and what support you will still provide. Different domains can have different levels of independence; the tool is not an age-based readiness assessment.

Common Questions

What do I select in the Autonomy Ladder?
Choose a domain and the current level of oversight. The tool shows guidance for the next step in that domain, or indicates when you have reached the top level.
Should independence be the same in every area?
The tool lets you consider each domain separately. Use the transition that fits the responsibility you are discussing rather than treating one selection as a judgment about your child's overall maturity.
